One of the first things to do is to decide where you are physically going to sell your cards. Are you going to sell online with your own store, on a managed platform such as Etsy, or through local businesses and crafts fairs? Word of mouth and selling cards to family and friends will only go so far when it comes to selling cards. Good research will help to determine the opportunities.
In Etsy's first year, it attracted attention for frequently adding new tools and functionality to the site to help sellers gain exposure and traffic, including Adobe Flash-based visualizations and a taxonomy of categories with tags. Etsy passed $1.7 million in sales in May 2007. On July 29, Etsy had its one-millionth sale and anticipated its two-millionth sale would occur mid-December 2007. In November 2007, buyers spent $4.3 million purchasing 300,000 items for sale on Etsy, an increase of 43 percent from October 2007. In June 2007, it expected to be profitable by the fall, but in December 2007 it was not a profitable company. In January 2008, Etsy received an additional $27 million in funding from Union Square Ventures, Hubert Burda Media, and Jim Breyer.
If you are making cards or other products using third-party graphics, remember to check out the terms of the artist. Not all font creators, stamp and graphics designers, and other artists allow you to sell work that you have created using their work. Some of these companies have restrictions. These restrictions might include limiting the number of cards made from any one stamp in a year or how the cards may be sold (for instance from retail outlets only and not online or from markets). Some companies require that the stamp information is placed on the back of the card or that the designer's name is credited.
47) French Settees. This is a circa 1850′s Paris print of two elegant ornate French settees. There are such amazing details on these ornate settee images, from the tassels, to the pillows, to the floral swags and garlands. I’ve included the original Sepia toned version, with all of its ageing and patina intact and a black and white version as well.
First it was brush-lettered calligraphy place cards, then came rustic DIY chalkboards—but this year, designers are upping the ante once more and taking seating signage to new creative heights. “In 2019, guests are being guided to their seats in style,” says Dayna—and the options are virtually endless. From vintage-inspired luggage tags and customizable metallic maps for the couple who loves to jetset, to real fresh-cut leaves and mini planter sticks for green-thumbed brides and grooms, this year’s seating charts are both “personal and playful,” says Dayna. “Plus, they make for great keepsakes!”
46) Coffee Spoons Print. This fantastic coffee spoons printable was scanned from an antique silverware catalog. The print shows a collection of 15 silver coffee spoons, in all different patterns, fanned out in an oval shape. If you look closely you will see that each of the pattern names are next to the spoon. Some are very ornate and some are quite plain.
Before starting a handmade card business that uses artwork from another designer, be it in a stamp form or ready printed, check whether this artwork comes with a commercial use license or if you have to pay for the licensed image (once or every time it's used)? If you do have to pay for the image, make sure that cost gets factored into your pricing formula as you determine the per-unit cost of your cards.
In 2011, in an effort to add social networking features to Etsy, the company implemented features that allowed users to search other users' buying histories and to trace their purchasing transactions. Etsy thought this feature would allow Etsy users to connect to individuals with similar buying and/or selling histories and an automatic opt-in was applied to all users without the attainment of prior permission. Users of the service raised concerns over the feature's violation of privacy rights, but an official response was not released by the company.
In an interview in August 2013, CEO Chad Dickerson emphasized the importance of human interaction and meaning from creativity in regard to his perspective on Etsy. Dickerson described the website as "a platform that provides meaning to people, and an opportunity to validate their art, their craft", and after spending time with Etsy users, Dickerson learned that "all commerce is about real human interaction". Dickerson also provided a summation of Etsy that is a further reflection of the company's relationship- and meaning-based ethos: "At the end of every transaction, you get something real from a real person. There is an existential satisfaction to that."
In September 2015, Etsy made further changes to its manufacturing policy with the launch of Etsy Manufacturing, a marketplace allowing sellers to connect with outside manufacturers to fabricate their products. Manufacturers must be reviewed and approved by Etsy to ensure they adhere to certain criteria, although Etsy will not conduct visits or in-person inspections. Sellers must apply and be approved to work with any partners listed on Etsy Manufacturing and are required to disclose their use of outside manufacturers on their pages.
Thank you so much for your beautiful prints. I have been looking for some maps to put on the top of my dad’s old desk and you have just what I was looking for!!! So excited. I tried to transfer a print once and it didn’t turn out so I can send a print to Office Depot to print for me. Again, thanks and I will let you know how it turns out!!!!!!!!!!!
Call her clairvoyant, but last year Dayna predicted statement sleeves would take the bridal fashion world by puffy, voluminous storm in 2019—and all signs point to an accurate forecast. But before you start conjuring up visions of rigid, restrictive Victorian getups, think again—these sleeves are loose, flowy, and thanks to sheer fabrics and patterned lace cutouts, even downright sexy. Dayna’s top picks for a “glamorous, romantic, and completely Insta-worthy” long-sleeved look? Retro bell sleeves and—wait for it—an effortless silk bridal caftan.
