Identifying your target market is key. Your target market is the group of people who will buy your cards. Getting the word out about your product is your marketing plan. Knowing your target market will help you define your prices and determine where to market your cards. For example, if you sell cards which will appeal to hipsters, your target market is going to be very different than if you are selling cards for a kid's birthday.
A variety of products are sold on Etsy, including arts supplies, handmade products, and vintage pieces. Vintage pieces can only be listed if they are a minimum of 20 years old. In order to sell products on Etsy, users must create a username and have the option to create a shop name. The username cannot be changed once created. Since online signup appears for every region internationally, Etsy provides a global shipping feature.[11]
In an interview in August 2013, CEO Chad Dickerson emphasized the importance of human interaction and meaning from creativity in regard to his perspective on Etsy. Dickerson described the website as "a platform that provides meaning to people, and an opportunity to validate their art, their craft", and after spending time with Etsy users, Dickerson learned that "all commerce is about real human interaction". Dickerson also provided a summation of Etsy that is a further reflection of the company's relationship- and meaning-based ethos: "At the end of every transaction, you get something real from a real person. There is an existential satisfaction to that."[90]
Digital stamps are like any .png file. They can be resized in a photo editing program, which means you can choose a size to suit the card or layout or craft item you have in mind! Once they have been printed out, digital stamps can be used in much the same way as traditional stamps. They can be colored and embellished. The finished images can be cut out and incorporated into handmade cards, gift tags, scrapbooks and a whole wide range of papercraft projects.
Never again will partygoers accidentally leave their favors behind when they head home at the end of the night. “This year, brides and grooms are sending guests away with gifts thoughtfully selected to be utilized and enjoyed in their everyday lives,” says Dayna. Because in an age of increasing attention to clutter (thank you, Marie Kondo), functional is the name of the game, and the most popular picks of the moment are the ones designed to be put to use—or even consumed, like these petite, personalized servings of coffee and honey.
Etsy is popular as a side-business,[19] as well as a place to buy goods made from recycled and upcycled materials,[20] along with less expensive or more unusual versions of mass-produced items.[21] The unique nature of many of the items for sale is part of their appeal to some shoppers.[22][23] Product photos on Etsy tend to be editorial or artistic instead of commercial catalog style.[24] Sellers can add tags to their products to help buyers find them,[25] and buyers can choose to search for items available locally.[26] Etsy staffers publish lists of featured items.[27]

The market for Christmas collectibles is actually on the rise, according to Terry Kovel, co-author of the Kovels' Antiques & Collectibles Price Guide. "All of the holidays have gotten more popular in collecting," she tells GoodHousekeeping.com. "And the most popular one obviously is Christmas." Vintage cards in good condition can fetch about $10 to $50 apiece, she says, but particularly valuable ones can shoot up into the three- or even four-figure range.

While it’s convenient to be able to find, upload, edit and incorporate images into your designs all in one space, none of the programs we reviewed have the full package of tools we looked for. As such, if you’re a dedicated Mac user, we recommend choosing greeting card design software based on the quality and style of its graphics rather than on its photo editing tools. If you also have a PC, you can check out our reviews of the best Windows-compatible greeting card programs, which have a better balance of editing tools and graphics.

On the Etsy homepage, potential buyers can type a "product description" into the search bar,[14] or, alternatively, they can "browse" through a list of options on the left side of the homepage, which includes Art, Home & Living, Jewelry, Women, Men, Kids, Vintage, Weddings, Craft Supplies, Trending Items, Gift Ideas, Mobile Accessories, and more.[15] Furthermore, buyers may choose from a list of categories by clicking on the "categories" link under "More Ways to Shop". This will bring the user to a page of over 30 categories, each containing subcategories.[16]
In March 2010, Kalin said that the company is profitable and "plans to go public, though not until at least next year."[69] Financial statements required to be filed by Etsy in order to go public show that due to reinvestment of annually increasing gross profits in marketing, product development, and management, the company has not reported a net profit as of 2015.[70]
Canva is the best place to design greeting cards if you have a Mac, but you can also use it to create hundreds of other projects, including business cards, flyers, book covers and infographics. In addition to being stylish, Canva’s images are high quality – you can move them around and resize them to fit your design without causing pixilation or creating jagged edges. And if you can’t find the right graphic in its huge library or you want to share a personal photo, you can upload your own. However, Canva is missing some basic photo editing tools, including a cropping tool and a red-eye remover, so you need to edit your images before you upload them. Also, it doesn’t have templates for traditional multi-fold cards like those you find in stores. Instead, it has templates to create flat, postcard-style cards. Another potential drawback is Canva is a subscription service. However, it’s easy to cancel your membership, so depending on the scope of your projects, it can end up costing less than some of the other programs we tested. There is also a decent free version, though it includes limited access to graphics. The service’s excellent support pages make it easy to figure out which membership is right for you or your business – its support information is searchable and detailed.

In March 2011, Etsy "introduced a Facebook-style social networking system called People Search...to help buyers and sellers connect with each other and become friends". By doing so, Etsy made any past purchase with feedback easily searchable, which caused many complaints. Etsy then made changes to the site to better guard information regarding users' purchases.[68]
On Oct 1, 2013, Etsy changed its policy to allow sellers to outsource production to third parties and factories and to use shipping or fulfillment services.[105] The new rules allow products to be labeled "handmade" as long as the original idea for that item — or its "authorship" as C.E.O. Dickerson says — comes from its respective seller. Further, the policy changes allow Etsy businesses to hire as many employees as they deem necessary (including workers in different locations) and allow sellers to ship orders via third-party couriers rather than the post office.[106]
What sets you apart from all the other card making businesses out there? How will you stand out? If you take a look at the successful handmade card sellers on websites such as Etsy, you will see that very often they sell into a tightly defined niche. This is useful in a crowded market. If you are worried about competing in a very general market, take a look and see if there is a niche you can break into. This can be what makes you unique, and set you up as one of the only businesses catering to that segment.

As of March, 2016, Etsy's top three competitors according to Hoovers Online are Amazon Handmade, Craigslist, and eBay.[91] Etsy has been compared to "a crafty cross between Amazon and eBay",[52] and to "your grandma's basement".[92] Etsy also has a number of direct competitors. DaWanda [de], based in Germany, closed in August 2018, ezebee.com, based in Switzerland, is a global competitor, but also caters to freelancers and professionals[93] Bonanza (formerly Bonanzle and 1000 Markets[94]) is based in the United States and focuses on clothing and fashion, Zibbet and Made It which are based in Australia, iCraft is based in Canada,[95] Artfire is based in the United States,[96] and Hello Pretty is an online craft marketplace targeted at South Africans.[97] Tindie is based in Portland, Oregon, and focuses on technology and electronics.[98] ArtYah is based in California, United States undergoing speedy growth and has worldwide sellers and consumers of handmade items, vintage and some craft supplies.[99]
